Seen in Hong Kong #7 : Junk

When I read Clavell’s Tai-pan (way before I first came to Hong Kong), this was what I pictured traversing Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbor.

This is not such a common sight anymore. These days, these junks are mostly rented out for company trips, tourist sightseeing trips around the harbor.

I was lucky enough to catch sight of this one when I took Chris’ cousins sightseeing along the waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui’s Avenue of Stars.

(Josh asked if it was a pirate ship.)

That's pretty cool, to tell you the truth...I wouldn't mind sightseeing on one of those. Oh, and I love the contrast the ship makes with the modern skyscrapers!

Oh, what a beautiful ship!!! It seemed like I used to see small junks with red sails in the harbor when I was in TST...Hmm. I could be imagining those, though. You took a GORGEOUS shot of that boat!

I just read a book about Zheng He... I would love to see a junk in real life.

A long time ago, I read an autobiography from a retired news correspondent. She wrote about how a colleague in Hong Kong got the home office to agree to ship his belongings back to the US. The agreement was my household items and "my junk". And it turned out, he had a literal junk (boat)! And they had to ship that boat across the Pacific for him.

So cool! We got to see a tall ship in the harbor at Halifax. It had a beautiful carved figurehead painted gold on the prow and it looked like an angel. They remind me of pirate ships too!

Did not know they were called 'junks'...interesting. Beautiful ship. I'm with Josh...looks like a pirate vessel to me too. On that note, only 16 more days until our national 'talk like a pirate' day...nope not kidding. Aarrr.
