My Father’s Paintings #1: A Sampling

Many, many of my dad’s paintings are of sceneries in China. He would travel to China at least once a year, visit different places. He has been as far as Tibet, Inner Mongolia… places that I hope to visit one day. Here are some his paintings of China…

The Hills of Flame at Turufan, Kansu (甘肃). Kansu borders Mongolia to the north and Xinjiang Province to the west. The Hills of Flame at Turufan, Kansu

Round Houses at Yong-ding, Fujian. The “round houses” are actually earthen castles of the Hakka people. Read more about these unique round earthen fortresses here.Round Houses at Yong-ding, Fujian

Mount Huang (). This is but one of the paintings that my dad did of Huangshan (literally “Yellow Mountain”). From the way he described it and from what I have seen in his paintings, this is on my places-to-visit list. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ah. I love the one of Yellow Mountain. Is that the place where people put locks for good luck in the New Year?

Beautiful paintings. With mountains that almost reach out to you - who wouldn't want to visit them.

Your father is very talented. You must be proud.

Do you paint?

Breathtaking scenery artwork by your father. Thanks so much for sharing. Love how he depicted the trees in Shaoshan.

Awesome!! Even though I'm Hakka (Gai Yen Ju Moyen), I know little about our heritage. Thanks for the pictures and info.

I can say that China is stunning - I lived there for a year!!

Really beautiful paintings! Does he exhibit and sell too? I'd love to see the China that he saw... my view is so far Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing... big cities, lots of smog, not much different from HK!

Those paintings are gorgeous! I totally can't make any drawing or painting look three dimensional at all, so I really appreciate the work it takes to create good art!

Your father has a gift. My goodness, his work is beautiful! I think the fourth painting is my favorite. When I look at it, I feel like my heart can be quiet for a while. :-)

Aw, thanks for all the kind comments. Yes, I am proud of my father. :)

@LPC: I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know, but I will try to find out and will let you know.

@Wanda: Uhm, no, I don't paint. I wish I do, though.

@Veronica: Heh, I wish I know how to speak Hakka. :)

@Tiaras: Then you've lived there longer than I have ever stayed in China (2 months)!

@Shal: Many of the places that my father went/goes to are off the beaten path... You are right, the big cities in China are not much different from Hong Kong. The villages and the places in the more far-flung areas are very charming, though. Oh, one "city" that is NOT like Hong Kong... Qingdao (yes, Qingdao Beer!). I love that place.

very nice collection.

Wow - these are incredible.

Question - is the Yellow River really look yellow?

ModernMom said...

So your artistic talent comes from your Dad! Amazing:)

Buckeroomama said...

@Lindy: I guess it is yellowish in certain parts. According to Wikipedia, it is "the most sediment-laden river in the world." The river got its name, though, from the Huang Emperor... and not because of its color. :)

Seriously, you need to give a generic non-detailed bio so I can understand how you ended up in H.K.

All I can say is WOW! His paintings are lovely and very captivating. Does he do exhibit shows for his works?

I just left a message and I'm not sure if it went in. Anyway, I just wanted to say how lovely your father's works are. Does he do exhibit shows for his works? I'm so impressed.

Wow, these paintings are beautiful! What a lucky man to be able to travel to so many different places.

Buckeroomama said...

Thanks for all your kind words about my dad's paintings. :)

@Johny: I thought about that, but there is no way I can do a "generic non-detailed bio" without more questions being asked. :) Let's just say that I was born in the Philippines; got a job offer in Hong Kong 15 years ago and have stayed ever since.

@Maricris Zen Mama: Yes, he's had exhibits in different countries. :)

@Nezzy: You can be sure that the kiddo's artistic inclination didn't come from me!
