Both Chris and I are avid readers and we are hoping that both Josh and Zoë will grow up to love books as well. We’ve been reading with them ever since they were babies.
Josh can ask to buy toys and no matter how much he whines or nags, I can resist the urge to give in (well, most of the time). If he asks to buy a book, he does not need to ask twice.
Growing up, I was surrounded by books. On her way from work, sometimes my mom would drop by the bookstore and she’d come home with bags (and on a couple of occasions, boxes!) of books. I remember how happy and how excited I’d get each time I’d see her come home with another stack of books. I would just lose myself in the stories, in the pictures, in the interesting facts.
Josh is now starting to read simple books on his own. During ‘quiet time’ (in lieu of naptime), he either reads or he draws on his sketchbook.
Yesterday, this was how he spent his quiet time.
I love his look of concentration as he tries to make out a word.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

That just warmed my heart. I hope when I have children they will embrace reading. I remember getting caught reading under the blanket with a flashlight late at night.
I love the first picture with his leg crossed and that concentration look is perfect!
Mr. Josh is very focused on his book. The little man is going to be a reader. You can see it in his face.
Enjoy the day an take time to enjoy all the blessings that surround you!!!
There's almost nothing better than watching one's kids read a book.
We are definitely sisters. I love reading and have read as a favorite pastime since I was very little. As a kid, I outread all of the books at one library so my mom took my sister and I to another one that seemed to carry more newer books. In fact, when I go to a library or bookstore, my favorite smell is the smell of books. (Silly, huh?)
Love that Josh can read during his quiet time instead of watching tv like most kids would want to do.
It's so clear that he's very much involved in the story. So cute!
That's a great love to pass down to your children...I think it's because of my mom that I love reading so much :)
He's really having a serious read there! I love that look of intense book reading concentration!
I love everything that has to do with books and reading. I love these adorable pictures of Josh reading. I love his expressions. I have raised readers that now read as adults. Reading opens the window to learning anything we want..and that's awesome! Happy weekend to you too!
PS You are an amazing mother!
Wow, I'll bet if you were standing on your head - he still wouldn't have taken his nose out of that book.
Good for him. Reading is a real gift.
I just love it when they concentrate when they are doing something. So so precious.
You can tell he likes books from the picture! Good job Mama. We love going to the library and getting books. The kids love Mo Willems books (he used to be a writer for Sesame Street) and I just discovered he has a site with a few simple games too. Another one we've been reading is the Gingerbread Baby from Jan Brett, love her books! Turns out she has a site too with coloring pages. So if you have some favorites try googling the authors you may find a site with activites for the kids!
@golonghorns: We love Mo Willems, too! Thanks for the tip about his website. We'll definitely be checking that out. :)
E has recently caught on to the Amelia Bedelia (sp?) books. I love that because I loved them as a kid.
I am all about early literacy! That's fantastic that you are encouraging this, too. BTW, I am sooooooooooooo glad to be back. I missed you! ;)
Oh how CUTE is that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And he looks so comfortable!
There is truly nothing so rewarding as passing on to your children a love of reading!
WHat are his favorite books right now? Is he reading the Easy Readers? We loved the Cynthis Rylant books during Sofi's Easy Reader stage. She read all the "Henry and Mudge" books and all the "Mr Putter and Tabby" ones, also.
My kids loving being read to. I can't wait till they can start doing it themselves.
He looks so serious in the pics!! Cute!!
He is so focused. How darling. And I think it is so important that kids love to read.
I love it when the kids want books. I always had my nose in a book when I was little!
This is wonderful!! What a priceless gift to give your kids--the love of books.
That is so great that your children are learning to love reading. Far too many kids get plunked down in front of the TV and video games. Well done!
What great photos of Josh reading. He looks like he already enjoys reading.
Thanks for the follow. I am now following you as well.
I love seeing budding readers emerge. Congrats to Josh!
