Zoë Tales #2

Because it’s Friday.
Because this little girl makes my heart sing.

This is a clip of her showing off her circle-drawing skills. She wanted to make sure that I recorded it for posterity.

We were driving along when Zoë spotted an ad on the side of the bus featuring a model in a hot pink dress, posing with one hand on her waist. Zoë pointed to her and said, “I like her! I wanna be like dat.” She then placed one hand on her waist in imitation of the model’s pose. Then she added, “I want long hair, zigzag like dat, too.” The model had long curly hair. By this time, both I and our helper, who was sitting next to Zoë in the back of the car, couldn’t contain our amusement and were laughing really hard. Zoë shushed us and said, “Zoë not funny. Don’t laugh.”

Must repeat: No laughing allowed. Need to take Zoë very seriously.

Josh and Zoë were watching a Playhouse Disney program on TV –in Cantonese. Josh wanted me to change it back to English because he could not understand. Partly because I didn’t want to and partly because I wanted to see what would happen, I told Josh to ask Zoë to help him understand*.
Josh: Zoë, what is kam sek?
Zoe: Uh, um, “present.” (She actually appeared to be considering the question, before replying confidently.)
Josh: Mommy, is that true? Does kam sek mean “present”?
Me: Zoë, really? Is kam sek “present”?
Only then did Zoë break into a cheeky grin and said, “Kam sek is ‘present.’ Funny!” Fits of giggles.

This was not the first time she almost had Josh believing her. Another time, she plonked down next to Josh when he was doing some activity on a Chinese workbook. She then started saying something that sounded very suspiciously like Mandarin. Josh then asked her what it meant and in a straight face, she said, “Get [the] toy out of the water.”

The thing with Zoë is that she’s a very effective prankster and is very good at keeping a straight face. And the things she comes up with? Let’s just say that every day is an adventure.

*I sometimes switch the audio to Mandarin or to Cantonese, just so that Josh and Zoë get exposed a bit more to those languages. Josh used to protest loudly that he couldn’t understand and would want it switched back to English. Now that he can speak Mandarin more, he doesn’t protest as much, but he doesn’t like it if it’s Cantonese, because he doesn’t understand that. Zoë has been attending a local nursery school where the main medium of instruction is Cantonese, but she also has exposure to Mandarin through a weekly play session offered at the same school. I don’t know how much she understands but she doesn’t object if I switch the audio to Cantonese or Mandarin.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

She is going to be a handful! I bet they keep you laughing all day. So great that you are able to expose them to so many languages, here we have mainly French and English but I believe Mandarin is becoming popular.

Now remember, "Don't laugh at Zoe!" How cute she is. She wants to be taken serious. So great that the kids are being exposed to so many different languages.

Zoe - your video just puts a big fat smile upon my face. You are precious!
R's native language is Cantonese but, she absolutely, positively insists that she wants nothing what-so-ever to do with learning 'Chinese'. I keep trying though.
Happy weekend.

I can't get over the multi-language considering you need to do. Its quite impressive. What languages do you speak?

I sometimes don't even speak English well. :P

LOL! Your Zoe is so adorable and smart too! How funny that she is learning to be such a prankster and have fun with her brother in this way. How nice that she is exposed to different languages in this manner.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful weekend!

Ok, you lost me at "kam sek". All I can think of is "gam sihk" (to fast)...and that wouldn't be on Playhouse Disney. And I am SOOOOO jealous of your language options there!! We have maybe 7 DVDs with Cantonese on them. *sigh*

Love it! Now what does kam sek mean? I wish my kids could speak another language. There are so many families of so many cultures here in Toronto that do spreak their native language and the kids learn that and English. Very Cool!

I forgot to add my kids got a kick out of watching Zoe and made me replay the clip!

Oh and it's so cool that your kids are going to be trilingual! Fun fact, I know a family who's kids speak English, Russian, and Mandarin! Crazy, huh?
