Fraidy Cat

When I was young-er, I went bungee-jumping. I am a licensed scuba-diver. I used to rock-climb. I was always game for thrill rides; no need to twist my arm.

There is this one ride at Ocean Park that was my favorite when I used to go there with my cousins during our visits to Hong Kong. It’s called Raging River. It’s actually a rather tame ride, as far as rides go. You get on a log boat and it meanders through leisurely, twisting and turning as it snakes down the “river.” A few bumps here and there, nothing dramatic. Until the vertical drop, that is. It is not that high a drop, but the log boat goes down at 58kph during the vertical drop.

My cousins and I used to climb out of the boat after our ride and immediately run back to queue up for a few more go’s on the ride. We would take turns sitting in front, where it was the most thrilling during the drop. By the time we were done, we’d all be soaking wet, drenched pretty much from head to toe from the spray as our boat crashed down into the “river.”

Well, I got on the Raging River again last week, after not having gone on it for over 10 years. (Yes, Ocean Park has been around forever.) As the boat started climbing up, I told Chris that I was getting a bit scared. And then the drop. I was screaming and my heart was pounding hard by the time it was over. It was fun, but I was scared. And I was not even this scared when I did my bungee-jump.

What had happened to me? Since when had I become a scaredy cat? This was a ride that I used to go on, --over and over and over, --and thrilled to bits each time I was on it. I don’t think I’d ride it again after this time. Forget about getting on the Mine Train (roller coaster) or The Abyss (vertical free fall)!

*Sigh* I am getting old.

Heeeeheeehe! It happens to the best of us! Something happens to the thrill of adventure as we get older.

Have a wonderful day, sweetie!

I always think of you when I post something I consider daring because I know some of the things you have done. I get terrified at the thought of bungy jumping. Apparently you need to get back out there ;)

I know what you mean. I can't get on any spinny rides (used to love them) without feeling sick for the rest of the day.

Ahh so what at least you gave it another shot!

I don't think it's about getting old, per se, I think it's when we have kids our being realizes we have responsibilities.

I LOVED roller coasters when I was a kid. Now? That drop-in-the-stomach feeling reminds me WAY too much of being morning sick. I can hardly do a carousel anymore! LOL

Last time I went on a roller coaster was with my daughter and I used to not be scared myself. It was the most horible thing I ever did... Riding the roller coaster with my then 13 year old daughter. Scared the living crap out of me, she loved it!! So now she is a nanny (At 22) and she is becoming afraid on roller coasters even the little ones. I told her that story and she said "it's kids they change you "(I also tease her that when she has kids she will be so paranoid!!)

You are so brave. I can never try on those. Even the Merry-go-round makes me nausea.

Oh my gosh, I know what you mean!! I used to LOVE roller coasters and now I won't even go on one!!

I totally get it! I used to love roller coasters but the last time I went on one, it took me like 2 hours to recover. I felt so ill. So not worth it!!

I think the fear take hold when you have so much more to lose and little ones who depend upon you. At least that's what I've found.
Well, and vomiting isn't so cool in public. :-)

You're not getting old, just wise! ;)

I like roller coasters too but it's been years since I've been on one and knowing me, I'd probably be screaming and not wanting to go back on one again after the first time around.

Isn't it funny how that changes with age!?! I'm the same way.

P.S. How did you get the numbers in your comments???

Ummm....it's called getting a brain. Now we know just what can really happen and what we could lose if it did.

You're not getting old....you just grew up!

I've noticed that too. All the sudden I'm afraid of things!

I think having kids does this to us. I used to try just about anything and now I can't even ride a regular roller coaster. The risk doesn't outweigh the thrill.

I've lost my appeal for all things adventurous in the roller coaster arena. I hope that doesn't mean I'm turning into an old fart!

being a mom makes you tough in someways but its turned me into a squishy ball of gooey pansyness in other ways...I can always find a way to blame it on the kids!

Wow, you sure were a daredevil in your younger years. I would NEVER, NEVER try bungee jumping! Too much of a scaredy cat to take that big leap. Whenever we go to amusement parks like Red Flags or Great America, I ride the kiddy rides with my girls :) No roller coasters or one of those death defining rides for me!

And I thought it weas just ME.... I used to love amusement parks and anything adventureous. Still do as long as it does NOT involve heights for some reason. Which most 'rides' do. I went on a giant farris wheel a while back and my son made them let me off because I turned all white and he could tell I was scared to death. So embarrassing!!
Thanks for sharing... I love your stories! They always cheer me! :-)
