What did you call your mother? Was she Mum, Mommy, Momma (Mama), Mom, Momsky, Mother, Ma…?
When I first learned I was pregnant, I very naturally started thinking of myself as “mommy,” even though I call my mother Ma. Imagine Bea Arthur’s character, Dorothy, in The Golden Girls calling Sophia (Estelle Getty) Ma. I loved that show! But I digress…
With Josh, I started as Mama, then I became Mommy. Occasionally he calls me Mom (as in But, MOM!). Zoë has always called me Mommy, but somehow lately I’ve become Mama. It’s Mama this, Mama that. I don’t know how that came about, but I’m loving the sound of it.
The innocence of Why, Mama? What this mean, Mama?
The sweetness of I love you, Mama; Sit with me, Mama.
The irresistibility of Please, Mama. Pretty please?
Just tugs at my heartstrings.
What do your children call you?

Aww! I call my mom "Mama" but I refer to her as my mom. Does that make sense? I think it's a change of cultures kind of thing for me.
I can just picture her saying all those delightful things!
My boy calls me Mommy still, but has begun starting the "MOM" thing. Which I've tried to nip in the bud :) And a couple of memorable times, he's referred to me as RACHEL. Ooohhh... he knew he was gonna get busted on that one! :)
I absolutely love all the heartwarming ways your kids refer to you! :)
My 22-year old daughter still calls me Mama. My son has called me Mom forever.
It's mama, for me :) Unless we're hearing "Moooo-ooooom!!" :D
I'm Mommy although my oldest is starting the Mom thing. I called my mom - mama then ma ... I think people thought I was strange back in the day.

Lael has always called me mommy but she slips a mom in there everynow and then,
My older kids used to call me mommy, but now I'm mom. Actually, they all call me mom now..lol.
I called my mother Mama when I was young and as I got older she became Mom. My kids also used mommy or mama when they were young and then as they got older I became Mom but still every once in a while in their thirties a Mama slips out.
God bless and ya'll have a bright and sunny day!
I always thought "momma" was a southern way to say it. I grew up saying "Mommy" but now that I live in SC, I don't mind when my kids say "momma" :) I'll take either one!
It is a beautiful greeting, isn't it. All of them - except on the days you hear it 500 times!
I called my mother Ma, then Ma Ma (two words), then Chelly. I still call her Chelly - a totally made up name.
My kids call me Mommy. One of them tried Mama, but it didn't stick.
A fun and sweet post. :)
When I was growing up, my mother was mama and mommy but mostly mama. Then, as I got older, I called her mom and still do.
My girls call me mommy. They've always called me mommy and they are 20 and 22 years old. They told me that I will always be their mommy.
Of course, I'm also Momo thanks to Baby Boo.
"Mom" except in my teens, then it was "Mother" ...
I'm known as Gran to my grandkids ... Just like the Berenstain Bears' grandma ... I've read those books to my first graders for so many years, I thought "Gran" was appropriate. (I must tell you I've campaigned for it since they were born!!)
I call my mother "Mom," but my little ones call me "Mami," or "Mama."
I'm with you...I think "Mama" sounds so charming! :)
Interesting. I was Mama...then Mommy...and I'm back to Mama again. I like Mama.
But I called my Mother Mom or Mommy. Depending on what I wanted, I guess.
This is an interesting question. When I was younger I would call my grandmom: Mother and my mother I would call her Mommy. But as soon as I got to High School I realized that the word mommy does not sound cool anymore, So I spoke to my mommy and told her. "Mommy, I can not call you mommy anymore, from now on I will call you mom, sorry" :)
I've always thought mama was so sweet! I called my mother "mom" but as I got older, my sister and I started calling her momma when we're being silly :) My kids (oldest is only 7) still call me Mommy, except for my 18 month old who says ma-ma.
I lol'd at "but MOM!" :) . I called my mum Mum. The kids mostly call me Mama and occasionally just Mum (normally in a situation like you mentioned!) and my daughter sometimes says Mummy, last night half asleep she said, "I really really love you Mummy" awww. I have awarded you some blog love at my blog :)
One of the most touching things I've ever heard was my mother describing how after her very aged mother passed peacefully after a long period of general deteriorating health and an illness - in other words it was no surprise or tragedy per say - the grief never hit her fully until the funeral director wanted to know if a sash on a flower arrangement should read "Mother". Grandma was not mother, she was Mom.
Whatever word a family chooses, it does become an incredibly powerful word.
I'm mostly Mom, but I'll get the occasional Mama or Mommy and normally she gets whatever she wants then. :)
I would call her mom. Or, hey you-just kidding.
Hi! I was wondering if you could do me a favor and see if my comment form works for you? All of a sudden, Im not getting any comments and wondering if its not working for some people-thanks!!
I'm Mommy...or Moooooom. SJ calls me MaMee. LOL
Oh, I loved the Golden Girls so much... long time ago.
I'm from Germany, I called my mother "Mutti", but the most people says "Mama" .
Lieb Grüße, Petra

Posts like this just go straight my soft spot...
My child calls me mom, mommy or even mother during play time.
She's the sweetest!
They call me Mommy in the same way that I call my mother Mommy. Although now, I call her Ma more often. My kids call my mommy, their grandma, Mama. I wonder what my granddaughter will end up calling me? :)
I love this...Before my first son was born I always imagined I'd be "mommy". But, turns out I was made to be a "mama". I love the sound of my kids calling me "mama" and I hope they never outgrow it!
