We did another birthday dry run for Zoë today. This time, I did not bake the cake. Or I could tell you that I made this and after seeing my previous cake attempts (here and here), I’m pretty sure you would not believe me.
This time, Zoë said she wanted a cake with strawberries and chocolate and, get this, tomatoes. The strawberries and chocolate parts were easy to fulfill. I could scour the whole of Hong Kong and I doubt if I would ever find a strawberry/chocolate/tomato cake. We bought this darling cake of strawberries and big white chocolate flakes, topped with a thin layer of jelly and thin chocolate swirls, from Panash. The same bakery from which we used to get our mini cheese bread before I discovered how easy it was to make our own (recipe here).
This is birthday cake #2 for Zoë. She’s going to get another one on her actual birthday in a couple of days. So far, we are not caked out yet. But I know we will be after Wednesday. I still have not decided whether to attempt another cake myself (either an ambitious rainbow layer cake or a red velvet cake) or just get another one from the bakery.
What do you do for your children’s birthdays? Do you bake your own cake or do you order one from the bakery?

My Tongginator, who was sorely disappointed that I didn't manage to scrounge up a birthday shirt, would be loving YOU about now. Three birthday cakes? Be still her heart!
Happy birthday in a few days, Zoe. *grin*
Oh, I want to try to be caked out but I would settle for a couple bites of that beautiful cake! I'll have mine without the tomatoes please!!!
Ya'll have a beautiful Sunday!!!
How elegant! What a gorgeous cake! Can I be 5 again and live at your house for a while?
Oooh, what a pretty cake!!
Last year, for Ming Wai's birthday, I made cupcakes and a round cake, from one single batch. If I remember right, the cupcakes lasted us two parties, and the round cake was the third one. Hehe
Kids' cake wishes crack me up sometimes! My son wants a cake with a purple "R" on it. "R" for Robin. But he doesn't want Robin on it, just an "R". And it has to be purple :P
I'm quickly running through to tell you I have passed on an award to you :) http://jemikaan.blogspot.com/2010/04/blogging-awards.html
What a great idea and a gorgeous cake!
I've baked my all my girls' birthday cakes - EXCEPT for my oldest's first birthday. That was the birthday my husband was deployed and I just didn't have the emotional strength to bake a cake!
Yum!!!!!
I do both!
That is a beautiful cake (even if it doesn't have tomatoes).
I am giggling at tomatoes! Love the photo
I'm just starting this mommying thing and trying my best to learn to bake! It doesn't always work out, and I looked at your photo and thought "YES! I'm going to stick delicious things on the sides from now on! MUCH CLEANER!".
Great photos!
White chocolate flakes? OH MY YUMMINESS!
This is a fantastic cake! I love that she wanted tomatoes. lol.
That is gorgeous.
Great cake. I will admit reluctantly that most of the time we buy a cake... But I have made some cool ones as well...

kids are so hilarious! my son being silly with dessert is also what inspired mine:) nice photo, makes me want to have a slice
Looks yummy! I think it's nice to have a store-bought cake sometimes for my children but I usually make them one.
You didn't sneak a tomato on top just for the birthday girl? That looks like one delicious cake. Please tell Zoe that a friend in California would like to know if she can share a piece of cake? If the answer is yes, then airmail will be fine! :)
wow..that's a beautiful cake..I'd love to sink my teeth into a slice of that:)
This is just so cute! And it's a beautiful cake, haha i wouldnt mind a slice!!
Lovely shot...

Just beautiful!
That looks good! I still can't get over this dry-run thing....she must be having a total blast!
That is SO so So pretty : )
I order from the bakery for sure : )
I always bake them myself. The kids tell me they taste way better that way.
That's gorgeous!
such a gorgeous cake!
i bake my own for my kids, but from a mix. :)
Oh that cake looks delish!!
We make our own birthday cakes in my house. They may not be quite that pretty, but that way my girls always get to lick the bowl:)
Yum! We bake cakes for birthdays - nothing fancy...the box kind and usually yellow with chocolate icing. Those rainbow cakes look awesome!
I love that cake!! So awesome.

What a beautiful cake!
I used to spend all night the night before my kids birthdays baking them what I hoped would be the cutest cake ever ... recently I just started doing cupcakes. Easier ... and they enjoy them just as much!
I love the cake! It looks so yummy but at the same time it looks too good to eat LOL!
We used to buy our cakes but now I've started making them myself because it seems like the ones we would spend $20.00 on don't taste very good anymore. I've had fun making the different cakes and my kids get all excited when they see them.
Cake never gets old but all the extra calories do! Too funny that she asked for tomatoes on her cake :o)
Happy Monday to ya!

I love the cake. I remember my sister wanting a fruitcake at two years. She didn't know what it was but loved saying because we laughed.
Sometimes I bake, sometimes I buy. This year my mother in law has made each child a cake. They have felt special and the memories are priceless.
This cake is beautiful, tomatoes or not! Those strawberries have me getting up to go to the fridge- yum! You read my blog often so you know that I kill myself staying up very late to make crazy birthday cakes for my boys. My Mom is my inspiration, she was always so clever when it came to my cakes, so it's one of those things I make the extra exhausting effort to attempt. But I always request a store bought ice cream cake for my own birthday...
wish i could bake cakes!! i'm ordering a 3D two-tiered cake for my bub's first birthday in june. can't wait to see it and eat it.
happy birthday to cute lil zoe!!

Holy Cake-a-licious! That's one smokin birthday dessert. I'm sure Zoe had fun devouring it.
I never make the birthday dessert as I'm too busy and stressed planning and managing the party. I heart birthday cupcakes.
M.
I love the cake! It's so pretty. We usually make our own cakes or cupcakes for birthdays. The kids like to do the decorating. :)
Absolutely gorgeous cake, and the way you photographed it is totally pro! Looks like a magazine shot... way to go!
If a party with lots of kids is involved, I order a sheet cake. If it's just the five of us, I make it. But I don't have the talent you have - my cakes are straight from the box - Betty Crocker or Dunkin Hines. Still tasty though.
Good to know that someone else has more than one cake for their kid. We have to have one on the actual birthday, and if a celebration is on another day, we have to have one then too. On rare occasions, there is a third cake waiting at Grandma's.
Oh Wow!! That is one good looking Dessert!!
YUm!【ツ】
I;ve never seen a dessert that looks like that. It looks yummy!
What a gorgeous cake! I have been making the kids' cakes (well, there's only been 4 birthdays so far) and it's been fun.
