Have you ever smelled something so good that you went out of your way and “followed the scent” to see what it was? We were taking a break at the Cityplaza food court when we smelled something that was absolutely divine. I looked around and noted that it came from the food of the boy sitting behind us. I couldn’t help myself. I asked him what he was having and from where he got it.
That boy –he must be about 10 or 11 years old, –was very accommodating. His parents must have been off getting their food and he was just content to sit there alone and “cook” his lunch. Because his lunch? Needed cooking. And what is more fun for a 10-year old boy than to be able to cook your own yummy lunch?
There were pieces of raw chicken and beef, corn, and chives on his hotplate and he was moving the meat around to “cook” them. It looked fun and best of all, it smelled divine. Did I say that already? Well, it bears saying again! It. smelled. DEE-vine! The peppery and buttery smell wafting up was almost too much for my senses. I’d almost wanted to order one for myself right there and then. He then helpfully pointed out that apart from what he was having, there were lots of other variants I could choose from –salmon, burger steak, rib-eye steak, teriyaki chicken, etc.
Chris and I both decided that we would try Pepper Lunch the next time we’d go back to Cityplaza.
And this is what we had:
It is such a simple concept. They prepare the food; you cook it yourself. Kinda like shabu-shabu. Ingredients? Nothing extraordinary. Lots of pepper, of course. Yet I want to go back again and try their other dishes on offer. It’s great value for money, too. No wonder there was such a line-up at this joint compared to the other outlets in the food court.
In Hong Kong. Pepper Lunch can be found at Cityplaza (Taikooshing), Silvercord (Tsim Sha Tsui), APM (Kwun Tong), and Langham Place (Mongkok). They also have shops in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, China, and Taiwan.
Would you pay to cook your own food or would you rather your food is served all nicely prepared and cooked?
