Have you ever smelled something so good that you went out of your way and “followed the scent” to see what it was? We were taking a break at the Cityplaza food court when we smelled something that was absolutely divine. I looked around and noted that it came from the food of the boy sitting behind us. I couldn’t help myself. I asked him what he was having and from where he got it.
That boy –he must be about 10 or 11 years old, –was very accommodating. His parents must have been off getting their food and he was just content to sit there alone and “cook” his lunch. Because his lunch? Needed cooking. And what is more fun for a 10-year old boy than to be able to cook your own yummy lunch?
There were pieces of raw chicken and beef, corn, and chives on his hotplate and he was moving the meat around to “cook” them. It looked fun and best of all, it smelled divine. Did I say that already? Well, it bears saying again! It. smelled. DEE-vine! The peppery and buttery smell wafting up was almost too much for my senses. I’d almost wanted to order one for myself right there and then. He then helpfully pointed out that apart from what he was having, there were lots of other variants I could choose from –salmon, burger steak, rib-eye steak, teriyaki chicken, etc.
Chris and I both decided that we would try Pepper Lunch the next time we’d go back to Cityplaza.
And this is what we had:
Beef Pepper Rice for me. I paid for extra cheese toppings. Next time I’ll skip the cheese.
Hamburger Steak for Chris. He said he liked my pepper beef rice better.
It is such a simple concept. They prepare the food; you cook it yourself. Kinda like shabu-shabu. Ingredients? Nothing extraordinary. Lots of pepper, of course. Yet I want to go back again and try their other dishes on offer. It’s great value for money, too. No wonder there was such a line-up at this joint compared to the other outlets in the food court.
In Hong Kong. Pepper Lunch can be found at Cityplaza (Taikooshing), Silvercord (Tsim Sha Tsui), APM (Kwun Tong), and Langham Place (Mongkok). They also have shops in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, China, and Taiwan.
Would you pay to cook your own food or would you rather your food is served all nicely prepared and cooked?

Oh yum...both look delish! Not sure which one I would go for. I love shabu-shabu too!

I want a pepper lunch at once :)
Except of course I just ate my supper : )
Maybe tomorrow I can find something like that! It looks delicious!
Oooo...fun. I love it! We need those in the UK. Although, then I'd just eat there all the time...
Mmm...those dishes look so good!! We have places like that here, where you cook your own meats and veggies!
Oh, that sounds like fun! Would I pay to cook my own food? Hrm...I don't know! I might be afraid the plate wouldn't be hot enough, and I couldn't get my food cooked. LOL
Oh, man...you've made me SOOOO hungry!!!
Great 'today' posting :D
oh my. that looks so good! Cooking it yourself sounds fun. We have a fondue restaurant in my city. You cook everything yourself. It's called "The Melting Pot"
It is very pricey... put so very good.
oh, & btw... I'm blaming my late night snacking on you! :)
Oh, that looks soooo good! You always share such yummy things. Thanks
Just as I guessed it as I was reading the post, none in San Francisco. We have shabu shabu but not like Pepper Lunch's concept :( So the 'pot' is a hot iron pot? And you just swirl the uncooked food against the pot?
Yummy! Are you sure there's a Pepper Lunch in Malaysia? I really gotta check it out!
Have a nice day.
I love shabu shabu! My friend Inja made it for the first time for me and since then, I have made it maybe twice. There is something about simple ingredients and sitting around the table together, enjoying the ability to cook and eat.
Now, THAT looks good! I'm not too sure about the egg with the hamburger steak though. But it does look so good.
hi..my first time visiting here.. u have a very nice blog and i love the pepper lunch u displayed.. the food is so "alive!" :p
My kids love Pepper Lunch, and they would visit the one at AMK Hub near their grandparents' place whenever we go home to Singapore. Personally, I don't fancy the smell of food in my hair, so I guess I am anti-Pepper Lunch, Teppanyaki, Korean BBQ, ... ;-P
Those actually look like something I would eat! :)
Although if I'm eating out, I'd much rather have someone just bring me my food, already cooked. I cook enough at home! :)
Yum! That looks so good.
And yes, I would "pay to cook my own food." We go to the Melting Pot frequently and I love not having the mess in my house.... plus, it's so darn yummy and fun to have!
This looks so good, now I will be starting my day craving something delicious! I'd be happy to cook my meal if someone did all the shopping for me!
Pepper lunch makes me want to say, "Buen Provecho!" our local way of saying Bon Appetit. I am baking plaintains this morning, before the sun gets too warm. Great with a hint of butter, cinnamon and citrus.
I have never been to a restaurant where I must cook my own food, but the result you have pictured is very appealing. I imagine the aroma is not unlike fajitas at a Mexican place where the ingredients come out still cooking on a hot iron skillet.
That looks sooo delicious! I want to learn how to cook food like that so badly!
Wow....looks really yummy! :) Good thing it's lunchtime here.
How fun to be able to cook it yourself!! Both dishes look super yummy!!
Oh Yummy!!!!
"Se me hace agua la boca" I don't know how to translate in English...."my mouth is watery" LOL or something like that!
It looks DELCIOSO!!!!
My youngest would adore this! What a shame they don't have it here.
It look mouth droolin' lip smackin' delicious, but when I go out I want to be pampered, waited on and cooked for. What can I say, a chick needs a break from the kitchen.
God bless and have a wonderful day, sweetie!!!
