We had missed the big dragon boat race on June 16. We were planning to go and watch, but at the last minute, had decided against it. I just wasn’t ready to brave the crowds with two kids in tow. Plus, Chris needed to organize his office space… and the kids got to run around and have a make-believe strategy session.
As luck would have it, we ran into a friend after church this Sunday. He was in Stanley for a short dragon boat race that morning. It was drizzling, no sun, but at least the weather was not stiflingly hot. We decided to stop by and watch a bit. So that’s how Josh and Zoë still managed to get to see a dragon boat race despite me chickening out at the last minute a couple of weeks ago.
I’d forgotten how fun it is to watch these long thin boats surge and glide smoothly through the water, with the rowers paddling in unison, paddling to the rhythm that their leader beats out on the drum.
We didn’t stay long, though. After one heat, Josh and Zoë asked to leave. It was raining and both of them were more excited about getting to use their umbrellas in the rain than staying to watch the rest of the race.

It does look like a fun event to watch. But I don't blame the kids, umbrellas are waaaay more fun for the under five crowd!
Now... off to find you on Twitter!
I have never been to a dragon boat race but had always wanted to go to one just to see what really goes on. Last month, while driving home, I saw a big poster announcing the race at another city and my husband and I said to ourselves we must go this year. Well, we completely forgot about it and the event passed. Maybe next year...
That is just beautiful! Wow. I love that you got to go after all! YAY for second chances. I also love that Zoe and Josh wanted to use their umbrellas more than watch the race. Those two are so cute. What sweetness : )
Looks amazing, even if you didn't get to stay long. But umbrellas are pretty exiciting too!
What a great shot!! Every year I say I'm going to go and then miss them. Too busy. Argh.
Glad you got to take in one heat with the kiddos.
The boats are beautiful! How long and how far is the race? Do they win anything? Of course, puddle jumping is definitely more fun.
That would be so cool to watch!!!
What is it with kids and umbrellas? My youngest daughter always insists on holding it!
lol!!! Kids and their umbrellas!!! Isn't it strange that how after we have kids we have to prioritize our outings according to their liking?? The dragon boat race seems like an interesting event!!
We have never watched one live, must be fun!
Looks like so much fun! Nice photo.
I love the photo. Magical. Inviting.
Waht a fun thing to go to! I wish we had something like that. (:
That is so cool!...so unlike anything we have here. Watching uncle Eero row his little wooden rowboat across the lake is about as exciting as it gets here ;D
And, my kids would rather do the umbrellas, too, given a choice!
Happy Tuesday!
That would be very cool! I'm glad you had a chance to stop and see it!
We've traveled all over the world. What a delightful post.
Delighted to meet you today. I hope you don't mind if I splash around a bit to get to know you. This looks like a delightful spot to slip off my shoes and drench myself in goodness.
Splashin,
Sara
Oh my goodness that looks amazing!! Can't believe they are the short boats! the long ones must be huge!
That looks like so much fun!
Those boats are just beautiful!
oh wow! That looks so fun to watch and the boats are just stunning in their colors and patterns.
Wow you live in a wonderful place!!
How FUN!
Beautiful photo! I love the colors in the photo.
Isn't it funny the things that kids decide are fun? Sometimes it amazes me the things my boys want to do.
That's amazing! I would love to see that.
