A Recipe for Dirt Potion

(…or every child’s dream and a mother’s nightmare.)

The kids absolutely LOVE playing in the backyard.  It used to be just running around, playing with water.  Lately, it has evolved into making dirt potions.  They would gather up loose dirt and put it in bottles or whatever containers that they can get their little hands on.

 Gathering ingredients 1

Never mind the clouds of dust that fly up, that cling to their clothes, that stay under their fingernails.  Never mind that they have streaks of dirt up and down their legs and arms, on their cheeks.

Gathering ingredients 2

They would patiently scoop dirt up with a spoon or with their bare hands into a container, fill it up and then carry the container over to the bucket which they had filled with water and crushed sidewalk chalk and stones and grass and other icky stuff.

Dumping-1

Then they would happily dump, dump, dump.

Dumping-2

And then they would stick their fingers, their hands, their arms into the icky goo and stir.Kyler

 The icky potion

They had one single objective:  To make the most potent dirt potion for Uncle C.  This was one activity where all of them really cooperated.  No bickering.  No teasing.  Everyone of them played so well together.

We just had to look past the dirty clothes and grimy arms, legs, and faces.  They were having so much fun.  Some days, a little dirt is not all that bad.   Even when your daughter turns her brand new all-white shorts to brown.  Even when the water gathering at their feet during shower time is muddy, even after several washes.  Even when you have to soak and scrub the clothes and shoes they had on.

Let me tell ya honey, it probably beats the heck out of makin' cow manure pies! My two would have mudball fights and I would hose them down before I'd let 'em in the house.

The kids look like they are havin' a blast and that's what counts!!!

God bless ya and have a marvelous evening!!!

I can so feel your pain on the dirt thing! That is my boys favorite thing to do in the backyard! Despite the crazy mess it makes, I still love watching them have so much fun playing with something so simple! You can buy all the toys in the world but they will spend the most time outside in the dirt! I love it! The pictures are great! Hope your week is going well!

I love this... just wait until they get older.. Three different times my boys dug deep holes... Big deep holes 5 ft. x 4ft by 4 to 5 ft deep. The first time they did this they were 8 to maybe 12. Get this .. they were trying to find the water table.

I don't quit remember the 2nd time ... the third time they dug that big of whole they were ages 8 to 14.. after they dug the hole they put water in it because they wanted a swimming hole...Mined you my boys are now 22, 19, 17, 13 and 6. But the time for the last hole the youngest boy was 2 and girl was 6... They were put to work as soon as we found out they did this.. they had to bail it out and fill it back in.

I guess my point is don't put anything past boys.. They have two much energy...

Ya, what's with playing with dirt??! I've made a perfectly lovely sandboat (box that looks like a boat) for my two, filled with nice "clean" sand... but they STILL choose to play in the dirt pile accumulating from my gardening project! Ah, well...anything that keeps 'em occupied and playing nicely can't be all wrong (as long as they're not wearing white, that is ;D)

If they are having fun and playing nice together then it is all worth it!

Now that's what I call teamwork. These kids play well and work well together. My girls doesn't like to do anything that involves dirt. They won't even help me with my backyard.

That is quite an operation. I used to love to play in the dirt, but they really mean business.

Haha...this is so great. Dirty little guys are the cutest. My son is always covered in dirt. I always tell him I don't recognize him when he smells good. ;) But somehow he still smells great to me. Only his mom though, I'm sure. ;) haha.

Dirt + stink = boy! Now, just ask him in about 10 years, if he would want to take the dirt potion from the barn and put in on your flower garden! Funny how they won't look at it the same way! When little guys are dirty, though, you know they are having the time of their life! What a great post!
