We woke up this morning and for the first time since summer started, it was not scorching hot. I decided it was a perfect day for the beach. We hadn’t hit the beaches here in Hong Kong at all, so this is our first beach trip of the year (not counting the beaches we’d visited while in Canada).
Despite Zoë trying my patience being a tad difficult over breakfast, we finally managed to head out. I decided to go to St. Stephen’s Beach this time, instead of Big Wave Bay, Shek O, or Stanley (our usual beaches). St. Stephen’s Beach is just a little bit further down from Stanley Beach, but is not as easily accessible, so I figured there wouldn’t be too many people. As it turned out, we had the entire beach practically to ourselves, apart from a couple of old men taking their morning swim!
For those of you who love to take photos that way I do, that means clean, uncluttered shots, without having to edit out arms and legs of other people in the background!
They started out digging and trying to build a sand castle, but the sand at the beach was rather coarse and it was not easy to tamp down and shape. Eventually they gave up.
For a while there, both Josh and Zoë were going around trying to dig out all the big rocks embedded in the sand. They would then move them and put them together in a “Rock Family.” They got some with pretty colors…
The highlight of our beach morning, however, was finding clams –lots of them! Pretty soon, everything else was abandoned and we were walking up and down the whole beach, digging for clams.
And there were plenty! We didn’t even have to dig deep…
Josh and Zoë insisted that we bring them home… as, er, their pets (!). We did bring them home and we transferred them into a basin to let them soak and spit.
We made clam soup with lots of ginger. They tasted so yummy! Josh wouldn’t eat one. Zoë scarfed them down. The clams would have been perfect for spaghetti vongole. Our friends (and Chris and my mom, too!) were horrified to learn that we actually cooked and ate the clams. I was a bit leery, too, at first, but I figured the water at that particular beach was clean enough (that I could see) and we boiled the clams to make soup, so hopefully the boiling would’ve negated whatever nasties there might have been in those clams.
Will we do it again? Yes to St. Stephen’s Beach; yes to digging for clams… but maybe we will leave the clams at the beach next time. I wouldn’t want to push our luck.

Love your day at the beach. The kids are so sweet. I could look at pictures of them all day. Seriously.
You are so adventurous making the soup. Love it.
What a gorgeous beach! I loved digging clams as a kid and having the clam bake right at the beach over a campfire. Takes me right back :)
Wow. That's a whole lot of clams. We definitely don't have those kind at the beach we go to...the ones my kids find are so tiny.
What a fun day at the beach! Love the photos.
Those are some great photos. You were lucky to have the beach mainly to yourselves.
How do you edit out people in the background? Do you use Photoshop?
What a fun day. The photo of them sitting in the water is priceless but the others are adorable too. How nice to have the beach to yourselves. I think it's really neat that you made soup out of the clams you dug. Thanks for taking me to the beach with you today. :)
It sounds like a perfect day at the beach! Your little ones are soooooo cute in their swimsuits!
St. Stephen's beach looks like the same beach in many Chinese movies. I wonder if it is the same beach... I'm surprised that you were able to dig so many clams! At the beach nearby to my house, during low tide which means past midnight, there'd be crabs and so, many people would go crabbing around that time.
Wow! It looks beautiful over there. And I love how it's not crowded, and the water is just shallow enough!!!
And what you made with the clams sound delicious!!
I love the pictures! It looks like such a great day at the beach! I am so with you on loving it when no one is around LOL! I hate when I can't get a good shot because there are too many people
Cute pictures and it sounds like a really fun way to spend a nice day! I love the kids' full coverage hats--I think sun-safety is really important!
You take the best photos..seriously I am always in awe of you. I wish I could capture faces the way you do.
I love the idea of using ginger in your clam chowder.
I also love their little legs!
Awesome. This makes me want to visit the beach so bad! Unfortunately, there are none within a reasonable distance.
I just love that they had so much fun gathering the clams that ended up being supper. Oh to have clam chowder - delish! We are going to the beach in a month and in this particular area you can find sharks teeth. I am not sure why but it is so fun to search for them. You photos are beautiful mama! Very uncluttered :)
What would life be without a bucket and spade?
I think you already know how I feel about this post - the ending especially. :)
All I can think of is how good those would be on a bed of pasta with butter and garlic-yummy!
I've never had clams...I'm kind of scared of seafood. ;) But glad you guys enjoyed it. Great shots!
Looks like a great day!! I would love to have the beach to myself, but that's pretty impossible this time of year. Glad to be a part of Communal Global!! I'm still trying to figure out how I can link to everyone, especially since our linky tool doesn't work on Wordpress :(
A day at the beach is always a good day. Clams? Added bonus. I remember the first time I witnessed my father boil crabs for dinner. My dear crab friends were dying. Actually it was horrifying and fascinating at the same time. I ate them, as I recall.
First off, that's a LOT of clams!!!
Second...you ate clams...that have drunk the HK harbour water. 8-l
I suppose you did boil all the nasty out. hehe I'm sure they were delicious!!!!
What a fun day! I love all of your photos.
Those pictures are so beautiful. What a fun day. My kids always have the best time hunting for treasures of any kind. They would have loved looking for clams! And that is so neat that you even made a soup of of them. You are so talented!
Beautiful pictures, as always. I love watching little kids play together, they have such great imaginations...and your two...just so cute!
Oh baby, I wanna play! We are in our third week of temps over 100 here in the Ozarks. Even my pool is to hot to swim in. The beach looks so very inviting and the kids are adorable as usual.
Have a fun and very blessed day!!!
The beach looks awesome and fun!
Heaven...I loved those days.My boys are teens now, but we have good memories.
