For the Love of Books

During our recent road trip to San Francisco, we stopped by Portland.  Of course, we had to visit Powell's.  In fact, we visited twice --once on the way to SF and again, on the way back!  I love books and I love bookstores, but I particularly love Powell's.  It's like a library plus --all the books you want, but all the other fun stuff, too, like book bags, socks, stationery, etc. What I really love is that on many titles, you can actually choose to get either new copies or used ones.  Their used copies are practically new, in very good condition, at a fraction of  the price of a new book. What's more, no sales tax, yay!

Needless to say, we got way too many books (but I am not complaining)! Below are just some of the books (mostly Josh's) that we lugged back with us.  I find it hard to say no when the kids want books. But when they read as much as my kids do, I really want to invest in a Kindle. Just finding it hard to make the leap from reading a book book to reading from a tablet.  Call me weird, but I love the feel of a book in my hands and I love the smell of a new book. I love seeing books lined up neatly on the shelves or even haphazardly stacked in odd corners.

Yes, I "protect" most of our books with clear contact paper
(the ones that I know will get re-read).
Curled up corners bug me big time!

Sigh, oh Powells!! I do 90% of my reading with actual books and 10% on the ipad kindle app - that's great for when I travel!

Oh how I love books too! I've gone to Kindle for books I buy. It's so great to order and have the book available the same minute. But I still always have lots of library books at home. I had to sign up for Library Elf to email me due dates so my fines aren't so high :). Enjoy your books!

I think a lot of people feel that way about the touch and smell and color of a book and its pages but I found how much better I could see on a kindle or device with the kindle app (in most situations). And I love the free samples. Free book samples, who would have thought? You have an impressive stack there and let's hear it for kids who crave books.

I'm with you - I love reading, and can't resist a book store. I love the feel of a book in my hands and the smell of a new book. It harks back to new reading books in my primary school days. I am resistant to buying a kindle too - it could never replace the feeling of a real book. Recently I had to unload all my bookshelves while walls were painted and new carpet put in. I did clear out a few books, but most of them went back on the shelves. Far too precious to me. I think books reflect our personalities. Happy reading!

Although, I love reading from a book, I love the convenience of my Kindle. You can get almost any book you want on Kindle and then there's the wealth of free books too, not just the classics, but all the time new books are released onto Amazon for free. And the offers you get get (monthly, daily etc) they make for really cheap books. I rarely pay more than £1.99 for an ebook and I've amassed quite the collection through the deals you can find and free ones.

I think the benefits of a Kindle outweigh my joy of reading an actual book. Plus as someone who doesn't have plans to settle and likes to move around, buying books isn't practical for that. I prefer to just not own books, but that doesn't stop me taking them out of the library when I want to read a physical book. Maybe that's another way to look at it, a Kindle and a library card, that's my perfect combo.

I've heard good things about Beyonders by Brandon Mull, that's definitely a series I'd like to have a read of!

I love books too and can't quite come at going over to an electronic version. I do have kindle on my phone with some books on it so I've got something when I don't want to cart a book with, or just don't have one with me. I wish I found more time for reading these days though.

That's a fun treasure trove to take back with you. :-D I made the leap from books to the Kindle App about five years ago... but I still buy real book too. I mainly buy the books I know I want to own, if they ever go out of print. I love to feel a book in my hands too, but I find I read faster on my Kindle... hmmm.

PS I love that your kids are readers.
