You know Christmas is just around the corner when you see poinsettias starting to pop up everywhere.  Here are some random facts about this very pretty plant:
  • Also known as Christmas Flower, Euphorbia, pulcherrima, Ataturk flower. Noche Buena (in Mexico and Guatemala), Flor de Pascua (in Spain).
  • Its association with Christmas began in 16th century Mexico, where legend tells of a young girl who was too poor to provide a gift for the celebration of Jesus' birthday. The tale goes that the child was inspired by an angel to gather weeds from the roadside and place them in front of the church altar. Crimson "blossoms" sprouted from the weeds and became beautiful poinsettias.
  • The actual flowers of the poinsettia plant are in middle of the cluster of (often) bright red leaves (see photo above).
